The “Waitress” segment brought a different energy, with Bareilles more physically animated with a few bandmates who did duets with her. Bareilles assured him all was fine, and with the crowd rooting extra hard for him, he nailed it on the second try, a real tear-jerking moment of triumph. Matthew came out on stage and admitted to 4,000 strangers he was nervous, stopping halfway through the first line to say he’d already forgotten the lyrics. The audience didn’t rise to its feet until 15-year-old Adrian Matthew of Blairsville earned a standing ovation belting out “What Baking Can Do” as part of Bareilles’ midshow suite of songs she wrote for the smash Broadway show “Waitress.” Bareilles explained she had found out about Matthew through a viral video that somehow got a push from actor Zach Braff. The largely female concert crowd laughed knowingly as Bareilles admitted to quitting the yoga class because the instructor was annoying in an overzealous way. Rising to her feet and grabbing a guitar, Bareilles prefaced the energetic, drums-led “Eyes on You” with a story of how it was partially inspired by an 80-year-old woman she met at a yoga class. Next came “Poetry by Dead Men,” her sharp and plainly written kiss-off to the noncommittal guy whom she had dreamed of being “your white T-shirt girl over coffee.”
Luck is a helpful thing to have, though Bareilles, relied on her abundant talent to make the night a fun and uplifting one.ĭressed head to toe in velvety blue and backed by a seven-piece band, Bareilles started at her piano with “Fire,” which made good use of her cello and violin players.
Seven is a lucky number, Bareilles reminded the nearly sold-out crowd, adding she liked playing in a place given the ”beautiful” name of Moon. The UPMC Events Center hosted its seventh concert Friday, starring pop-rock singer/Broadway composer Sara Bareilles.
